Piedmont Park is Atlanta’s favorite green space. Originally a gentlemen’s riding club, the 185-acre park is now downtown. The site was transformed in 1895 when the Cotton States and the International Exhibition took place on site. Atlanta has hosted previous and smaller exhibitions, but because of its size, the 1895 exhibition is known as the “Atlanta Exhibition” – both literally and figuratively. Want a great place for a family picnic? Go to Piedmont Park! One of the largest parks in Atlanta for running, doing sports of all kinds, walking the dog, or watching the new pool facilities! There is so much to do here – a walk in the park! Covering over 189 acres of land, Piedmont Park hosts many festivals, gatherings, and exhibitions every year.
Summer is here and it’s the perfect time to walk in the park! Atlanta Market Park is the cornerstone of the city and hosts amazing summer events for everyone. From the park’s famous green square to free concerts, there is something for everyone.
Green Market
Summertime is the best time to explore the Piedmont Park Green Market. From March to mid-December, Green Market takes place every Saturday from 9:00 to 13:00 at the park entrance on 12th Street. From May to November, the market offers live music and a chef show, as well as weekly activities for children. The Summer Watermelon Festival is a special entertainment for everyone. Now in its tenth year of operation, Greenmarket has dozens of local suppliers specializing in sustainable agriculture, organic products, and beautiful handicrafts.
Picnics and Grilling
Once you have a choice in Green market, move on and head to one of the Grilling and picnic areas in the park. Indoor pavilions are available, but keep in mind they can be rented for the event. To make sure you have a picnic area, the park recommends that you bring a comfy blanket to sit on the grass or bring your own folding chairs. There are 22 charcoal grills in the park for your use. Portable grills are prohibited in the park, so only use the grills provided.
Walking & Jogging
If you want to enjoy Piedmont Park as the locals do, you should visit one of the many hiking trails. Take a casual walk or go out with a steady run. The trail length is usually between 0.7 and 1.68 miles, but the park encourages guests to explore and find a trail length that suits their needs. With many beautiful fountains, lush surroundings, and stunning views of Atlanta, walking or jogging through Piedmont Park offers pleasant exercise and wonderful scenery.
Unplugged in the Park
Summer Sundays are one of the best times to enjoy Piedmont Park. The local Park Tavern restaurant, located on the edge of the park at 10th Street and Monroe Drive, hosts a series of free concerts called Unplugged in Park” every Sunday evening summer. You can enjoy these shows in the lovely courtyard of the restaurant, or you can spread your blanket on the park’s grass and enjoy the show on the lawn. Make sure you arrive a little early to qualify for the best seats.
