Children’s Museum of Atlanta

While museums are usually seen as old and boring that doesn’t always have to be the case, that is the case of the Children’s Museum of Atlanta, where a hands-on approach is the answer to everything. Combining kids and museums can often be a hard task that’s why at this museum every exhibit is designed to be interactive, engaging, and fast, with visitors going from activity to activity in no time.

The Children’s Museum of Atlanta originally started as a “Museum without walls” meaning that while kids weren’t from the start the main focus, the idea of an interactive museum definitely was. However as time passed the organization redirected it’s focus on providing a space for the young community of Atlanta, resulting in its current mission of “Changing the world by sparking every child’s imagination as well as the sense of discovery and learning through play.”

Currently the Museum operates from two floors, with the second floor or mezzanine focusing more heavily on practical science, but all of the exhibits nonetheless follow the mission of “learning through play”. The exhibits at the Children’s Museum of Atlanta are logically the heart of the experience, and a lot of care has been placed to ensure that not only do they always provide a fun learning experience but that kids of all ages can participate in them.

Due to its nature as a hands-on museum every exhibit expects kids to take an active role in them, and one of the best examples is the “Fundamentally Food” exhibit. At its core Fundamentally Food is teaching the visitors about the minute details of the farming and distribution process, it’s a look at the food industry and all the parts that play a role in it. But the way it is designed makes sure that the kids are always being part of it, from gathering eggs and milk, to helping in the delivery process or going to the shop themselves. Kids learn every step of the process by being involved in a play version of it, at the same time they develop fine skills with other children their age.

Of course, at the end of the day the Children’s Museum of Atlanta goes beyond just the exhibits, as their mission is after all to teach kids. In this spirit the organization also holds a variety of programs to help both local and visiting kids to develop their skills from an early age. These include daily programs that take place every day and as such can be easily accessed by tourists, as well as more dedicated long-time programs. These activities are handled by trained education professionals ensuring the quality of the processes, and are geared towards getting kids ready for school.

The Children’s Museum of Atlanta is one of the most famous of its kind, and definitely one of the most interesting venues Atlanta has to offer. A hands-on museum is always a unique break from habit, and few are as dedicated to its mission like it. All of these traits make it an icon of the region and an important location to visit by any tourists in the area.
